Pierre-Xavier Collardot’s ritual paintings are alla prima works on 15 x 21 cm paper. They are created daily upon arriving at or leaving the studio. Started on a whim one day when the artist was sick, this series brings together studies for future canvases, images created for pleasure, copies, and still lifes. It responds to the need to paint quickly and without inhibition, on a modest and pre-prepared surface. Having always been fascinated by playing cards, oracles, and tarot cards, this form naturally emerged. Lending itself to meandering and repetition, what began as simply a way to loosen up his hand quickly evolved into a vast network of themes and symbols. As they accumulate, the images echo one another, and each painting can now refer to ten others, much like the book that is currently taking shape.
