Lola Giffard-Bouvier’s commission for IUNO is in a state of constant changes: her personality is multifaceted and cannot be reduced to a single aspect.
She is Giunone (Juno) Moneta, the admonisher, she who advises the people of Rome from the heights of the temple dedicated to her on the Campidoglio; Giunone Lucina, the goddess who protects women in labor and brings newborns into the world; Giunone Sospita, the propitious one, venerated above all in the city of Lanuvio. As we turn the pages of the small book created by the artist, we find her depicted in all the forms she has taken on over time. For Lola Giffard-Bouvier, the book is a true medium: it allows her to develop her artistic expression by transforming it and to construct a narrative. In this case, each portrait of Giunone is accompanied by a depiction of her attribute, as if each page were one side of the same coin. All the drawings are then pierced by a single point: an imaginary eye that connects the goddess’s various personalities.
