About the Artist

Rachel Merrigan is an emerging Irish artist, focusing on printmaking techniques such as screenprinting and etching.  Her research-based practice explores the superstitious landscape of Ireland, focusing on ancient healing practices.

Exploring the loss of knowledge around indigenous healing in favour of modern medicine, her work examines our connection to the ancient practices and landscape that provided the folklore for these stories. Contemplating heritage and identity in modern Ireland, she examines how these stories have been dimmed in the collective memory and aims to create modern representations of Irish folklore.

Informed by her background in design, Rachel’s work in printmaking, particularly through techniques like screenprinting and etching, becomes a visual exploration of shape, color, and texture. The graphic nature of her creations not only serves as a contemporary lens through which to view traditional folklore but also introduces an element of ambiguity, inviting viewers to engage in deeper inquiry.

Rachel’s artistic practice can be seen as a form of reenactment and re-remembering—an effort to resurrect and celebrate neglected aspects of folk history. By doing so, she aims to stimulate a renewed interest in the significance of the ancestral landscape in Irish folklore.
