Artist Statement

I captured this photograph of a market stall while on residency in Dikaia, Northern Greece, in July 2024. When I developed and scanned the image, I realised it immediately made me think of Palestine, and every time I look at it, that connection remains. The watermelon has long been more than just a fruit; it has become a powerful symbol of solidarity, survival, and resistance across the world for the Palestinian people and their allies.

About the Artist

Clara McSweeney is both a curator and an artist with an overarching research-led practice that informs both roles. Her research practice is focused on drawing attention to pressing social issues that are especially relevant in Irish society. These topics include the housing crisis, vacant properties, climate change, and injustices faced by women. Her current research interest lies in the peculiarities of certain vacant spaces in Dublin City, the potential dystopian future stemming from the housing and climate crisis, and the anthropomorphism of inanimate objects.
Clara’s process begins with researching a chosen topic, which involves primary observation, discussions, reading, and mapping. From these investigations, layered historical, speculative, or fictional narratives are developed that form the foundation of the work. These narratives are then realized through a range of media, including performance, sound, writing, speculative fiction, curation, and the activation of objects. Collaboration is a central aspect of her practice, and she regularly works with other artists, researchers, and practitioners to realize projects. Her role often involves directing the narrative of each project, shaping it into a cohesive expression of these critical issues.
