"Kurtosis" is a statistical measure that describes how the intensity (in
terms of brightness, contrast, etc.) of the pixels in an image is distributed. Through a multi-step technique, Alicia Basulto seeks to reflect the impact of each human movement and the trajectory that surrounds it.
The photograph captures a family braving the rain together, a metaphor for the struggles and progress we carry as a legacy of our ancestors, navigating both their mistakes and achievements. A sequence of events represented by rain in the form of darts.
Born and raised in a small village in central Spain, where depopulation is one of the region's most pressing challenges, Alicia Basulto was deeply affected by this reality. Always inspired by the social problems around her, she loves to tell these stories through photography, daring to experiment with techniques such as photomontage and wide-angle portraits. Her time living in Barcelona further influenced her perspective on the relationship between the individual and urban environments.
She now lives in Ireland and continues to be inspired by the
contrast between bustling urban life and the tranquillity of rural
solitude.
