The photobook Behausungen | Dwellings | Domicilia by Karen Weinert and Martin Päckert provides an insight into the fascinating diversity of bird nests. The large-format illustrations show selected pieces from the Senckenberg Natural History Collections in Dresden, including many exhibits from the late nineteenth century (part 1) that were specially made for the exhibition in the Dresden Zwinger. The tremendous variety of shapes and techniques is reminiscent of fantastic architecture. This show is supplemented by a photo series of native, standardized bird nests from nesting boxes (part 2).
The interdisciplinary project combines the perspectives of art, photography, natural sciences and museology on the historical objects in the collection. The camera shows the natural artistry of the filigree structures, the accompanying texts provide information about the characteristic nest shapes and behavior in the bird world.
