DESCRIPTION

The Wilhelm Gustloff was a cruise ship named after the assassinated leader of the Swiss Nazi party. It was sunk on January 30th 1945, hours after leaving the port of Gotenhafen. On board were over 9,000 Germai refugees, fleeing the Russian advance. Most of them perished in the icy waters of the Baltic Sea. It is estimated that 4,500 children died. On Polish navigation charts the wreck is noted as "Obstacle No. 73" (55.07N, 17.41E) and is designated as a war memorial site.

In Memoriam is a response to these events and to a place on the Curonian Spit in Lithuania which was once part of East Prussia. It was here on the Baltic coast that the artist first became aware of the complicated and tragic history of the region.

In Memoriam began with a journey to Lithuania in 2004 for an artist residence in Kaunas and Nida. The first installation was at Burnchurch as part of Kilkenny Arts Festival 2005 and subsequently at Canolfan Ucheldre Centre at Holyhead 2006.

She has exhibited widely, most recently in Matters of the Heart at Taste Contemporary, Geneva with sculptor Deirdre McLoughlin and in solo exhibitions at The Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda, The Ashford Gallery Dublin, Butler Gallery Kilkenny, The Dock Leitrim, Limerick City Gallery of Art, Kevin Kavanagh Gallery and Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin.
