One of a three-part mezzotint series investigating the term ‘the dark’ in both the literal and the figurative sense, through abstract, ominous forms considering what that phrase may hold for each one of us, or even possibly what it may not. The work considers and reimagines a stagnant space bordered between the mundane, a space with a great sense of uncertainty and ambiguity, providing us with more questions than answers.
Shania Sampson is a Limerick-based visual artist, printmaker, and recent graduate of the Limerick School of Art and Design, where she received a First-Class Honours (BFA) in her chosen elective, Print and Contemporary Practice.
Recently showcasing work in ‘The Limerick Show’ at Ormston House and Kim Crowley’s ‘What Now’ publication, Shania’s current practice investigates and envisions the unfamiliar, hidden worlds situated between two places or spaces, these liminal spaces where we can’t be sure what can’t exist. Her work chooses not to define, deny, or affirm these places, but rather creates an abstract visual and sensory experience, evoking emotions both confronting and unsettling upon her audience.
Shania’s work presents itself through various mediums, including mezzotint, risograph, and illustration, and aims to question how we capture what we can’t entirely comprehend, how can we convey and even further explore this, what does this look like, and what should it look like?
