Artist Statement

Sudden Parallels recreates a work on paper made in early 2024. There have since been three replications of this painting: a three-dimensional wall-hanging sculpture, a large triptych on canvas, and now this lino print. With this medium, the painterly marks of the work on paper are transposed to flat, levelled forms of colour. The forms themselves are also fractured from each other by a slight gap, establishing a border due to the white of the paper. Sean is interested in how flat planes of colour can evoke a depth without using traditional notions of perspective; some forms appear to recede or advance depending on their hue and intensity.

About the Artist

Sean Farrell is a visual artist based in Wicklow.
Implementing an expanded painting practice, he examines themes such as human psychology, the object, and memory. A central aspect of Sean’s practice is how colour can affect the perception of the viewer. Recently, he has been experimenting with printmaking techniques as an expansion of his painting practice.

Sean uses his paintings on paper, or “archetypes”, as a point of departure for further development into painting, sculpture, and printmaking. He creates many replications of a single archetype using different mediums in order to explore how changing the medium and scale can alter the final work.

In 2023, Sean completed a study exchange at HDK Valand, Gothenburg, Sweden. In June 2024, he graduated with a First in Fine Art at IADT Dun Laoghaire.
In June 2024, he was long-listed for the RDS Visual Art Awards. Sean’s work is included in the OPW State Art Collection and the DLR County Council Collection.
Exhibition highlights include Encounters with Failure at South Tipperary Art Centre 2025, RHA Annual Exhibition 2025, and Elastic Traces at Gislaved Konsthall, Sweden 2023.
