DESCRIPTION

Between 1970-73 tenants throughout Ireland stopped paying rent in protest against rent increases, poor housing conditions and a rising cost of living. Their eventual victory was described in The Irish Times as "undoubtedly the most dramatic and bloodless victory ever achieved in this century by tenants versus landlords". Until now this history has been almost entirely unknown. The story of the 1970s rent strikes is recounted for the first time in this pamphlet, which is based on interviews with people who organised and participated in the movement.
