DESCRIPTION

In celebration of Foam’s 25th anniversary, this landmark issue of Foam Magazine reflects on the museum’s legacy and the role of the photographic medium in society through the question: what makes an image stand the test of time? With a proud number of 92 contributors, the artists and writers featured in this issue offer a starting point for conversation and contemplation on the potential of images today, and a projection of those we wish to see tomorrow.

The question of what allows an image to stand the test of time serves as both reflection and provocation. It is a request to pause and reassess, to meditate on the nature of the image, and how it feeds and manipulates collective memory. The question reveals a preoccupation with the contentious origins of the camera, its roots in the imperial world order, and the alternation between its revolutionary potential and exploitative use, particularly with the rise of AI and the never-ending stream of visual and political propaganda. The magazine explores images that capture diverse ways of being and portraying oneself; that expand our understanding of our world; that have a positive social impact on society; that bear witness; and that work to build bridges across different perspectives.

A special section in this magazine features some of the most esteemed thought-makers in the field, such as Ariella Aïsha Azoulay, Oluremi C. Onabanjo, Vince Aletti, Gem Fletcher, Deborah Willis, Elisa Medde, and Erik Kessels, each selecting a single image they believe will stand the test of time, accompanied by their reflections. Five thematic chapters, Portraits, Innovation, Impact, Evidence, and Building Bridges, present portfolios from artists and past Foam exhibitors such as Tyler Mitchell, Lebohang Kganye, Laia Abril, Ernest Cole, Ren Hang, Sara Cwynar, Bertien van Manen, Sakir Khader, and Samuel Gratacap. In a featured conversation, Marina Abramović and Foam Magazine managing editor Katy Hundertmark revisit photography’s role throughout Abramović’s pioneering performance career.

The cover reinforces the issue’s central question: the front cover features a red shiny apple by Sara Cwynar, an enduring symbol of eternity, wisdom and seduction, in this case, of images. The back cover showcases Foam Paul Huf Award 2025 winner Myriam Boulos, whose work reminds us that photography is not only a witness to history, but also a mirror of identity. The new design of this issue of Foam Magazine is developed by Sandra Kassenaar and David Bennewith.
