Artist Statement

This image shows the area where the River Liffey forms in the hills of Wicklow. It is taken as part of Gerry Savage’s project titled Liffey Banks, which traces the River Liffey from its source in the Wicklow Hills through Kildare to Dublin Bay, exploring the river’s deep cultural, historical, and environmental significance. The project is rooted in a personal family connection that Gerry has to the river’s docklands, and the work expands to uncover the diverse lives, histories, and environments shaped by the Liffey.

About the Artist

Gerry Savage is based in Dublin and is a graduate of TU Dublin. Gerry allows his camera to uncover insights that extend beyond mere visual perception, rendering unique interpretations of the world around him. He sees photography as vital to contemporary life, which enhances the human experience by connecting diverse social structures. Its familiarity bridges gaps across diverse social structures, fostering a deeper connection among people. Beauty can be found in both the extraordinary and the mundane photographs he captures. While Gerry’s enthusiasm for photography is rooted in open-mindedness and optimism, he also recognizes the importance of adopting a critical perspective. This critical lens makes him aware of underlying structural inequalities and hidden power dynamics that demand his attention. In this way, Gerry’s passion for photography not only celebrates beauty but also invites reflection on the complexities of the environments in which we live.
