Learning from Craft stands out as a comprehensive artistic research project examining the practices of production and thought through craft in the contemporary world. Bilal Yılmaz and Lydia Chiatz, in their research conducted at the Elhamra tile workshop in Kütahya, aim to re-evaluate craft by focusing on the intersections of traditional crafts with contemporary art and culture. This research is enriched by the perspectives of figures such as Julia Bryan-Wilson, Theaster Gates, Yasemin Özcan, and Artan Sadiku, who delve into modern approaches to craft. Each, from their own disciplinary perspectives, approaches craft differently, redefining the role of cultural heritage in the modern age. This project brings together craftsmanship and art, posing new questions about production processes, social meanings, and aesthetic values, and considering craft as a way of thinking and creating.
