Christian von Alvensleben (*1941 in Munich) and his wife were regular guests on the Greek island of Rhodes, and twenty years ago they began collecting the remains of everyday objects that had washed up on the island's secluded beaches. These objects are often hardly recognisable and have been transformed into bizarre colour and shape objects by the decomposition process of the salt water and the constant movement of the sea. Like precious designer pieces staged in the studio and photographed with the latest technology, the waste and disposable products of an oversaturated consumer society do not fail to make an impact: a great visual appearance between fascination and shock. With Christian von Alvensleben, beauty becomes a means of enlightenment – what can photography do better?
