As printmakers, we follow patterns of iter and reiteration in our marks and processes, ever mindful of the necessity of each step. Just like optimistic gardeners, the marks we make are not immediately apparent. We are sowing our ideas and grafting alterations at each proofing stage. Similar to nature, printmaking can be seen as cyclical, combining additive and reductive steps that mirror growth and harvest. Geomancy, the ancient art of divination which interprets markings on the ground, formed by tossed soil, rocks or sand, is as speculative as the printmaking process. Often, a print's intent only becomes legible once the final matrix is printed. In our printmakers' garden we pollinate our plates with aquatint, we photosynthesise our polymer emulsions, we weed our foul bite, we sow our inks and we await the unfurling...

This publication gives a glimpse into the creative processes of sixteen artists who have explored the medium of printmaking through the prism of the natural world, highlighting the links and harmonies in our symbiotic relationship.
