Grand Stuff Book Launch at The Library Project

on February 15, 2022

Launch 6-8pm Friday 25 February
At The Library Project, 4 Temple Bar Street, D02YK53, Dublin

Join us for the launch of Grand Stuff, the latest publication by graphic designer Niall McCormack, at The Library Project, with invited speaker Dr. Mary Ann Bolger from Typography Ireland. The limited edition book will be available for sale on the night and is available to pre-order now.

Grand Stuff collects over 600 vibrant and colourful examples of Irish label art from the 1890s to the 1990s. Included are labels for minerals, beers, whiskies, hotels, linens, groceries, pharmacies, matches, charities and political causes. The labels, with a couple of exceptions, come from the collection of graphic designer Niall McCormack. An introductory essay explores the social, cultural, political and technological changes that influenced their production and proliferation.

"This collection of label art is a compelling look at a graphic Ireland that most fictional depictions of the country have overlooked. The acid-bright colours of Egan’s Lemon Crush and the reverse-arched block lettering on a box of Vesta matches are every bit as Irish as any mossy-green Gaelic-lettered postage stamp design. A line-up like this — all these beautiful instances of graphic cultural heritage in one place — is pure treasure for film artists, historians, design students, and for any modern graphic designer stuck for inspiration at their monitor." - from the foreword by Annie Atkins
