CUR SÍOS

Upping the Anti is a radical journal of theory and action which provides a space to reflect on the state of political organizing in Canada.

It is a volunteer-run movement journal based in Toronto (Dish With One Spoon Territory) since 2005. They publish theoretical and critical articles, interviews, and roundtables. Upping the Anti also includes a book review section where activists assess new writing on the Left. “Upping the Anti” refers to the team's interest in assessing the interwoven tendencies that define the politics of today’s radical left: anti-capitalism, anti-oppression, and anti-imperialism. Although inexact in their proclamations, these positions point toward a radical politics outside of the “party building” exercises of the sectarian left and the dead-end of social democracy. They are interested in stories that reflect these concerns. They publish pieces that actively engage with and intervene in contemporary movement debates.

The journal is aimed at people who already define themselves as activists or revolutionaries. Their primary goal is to elaborate and clarify the political strengths and weaknesses of the contemporary politics of anti-capitalism, anti-oppression, and anti-imperialism. They avoid specialist language and academic jargon. They will not publish your school paper.

In this issue: Glen Coulthard and Riley Yesno remember Lee Maracle, Himani Bannerji remembers Dorothy Smith, Eriel Tchekwie Deranger on Indigenous environmentalism, Sam Salour on Marxist theory, Rachel Small & Simon Black on anti-war organizing, From Palestine to Turtle Island comic by Yazan Al-Saadi & Sirène Moukheiber, Chris Dixon on cultivating a long view, Jennie Long on resistance in Padova, Isabel Armiento on food co-ops, roundtables on abolitionist organizing in Toronto and queer community spaces, book reviews and more..
