Protester Portraits ist die neueste einer Reihe von Veröffentlichungen, die Marc Fischer unter Verwendung von Details weggeworfener Pressefotos aus seiner eigenen Sammlung erstellt hat. Im Jahr 2021 kaufte er 1.000 Pressefotos aus zwei Auktionslosen, um mehr Material für die Ausstellung und das Buch „Protest Grim Reapers“ zu finden. Aus dieser Fundgrube gingen genau zwei Fotos für dieses Projekt hervor, so dass er nun die Aufgabe hatte, für den Rest interessante Verwendungsmöglichkeiten zu finden.
Für diese kurze Broschüre wählte Marc Fischer Fotos einer Reihe kostümierter oder performativer Demonstranten aus, die in der Art von Porträts gerahmt waren – obwohl die meisten ursprünglich Teil größerer Mehrpersonenkompositionen waren. Er hat die mit jedem Demonstranten verbundenen Ereignisse oder Ursachen sowie das Jahr, in dem jedes Foto aufgenommen wurde, gespeichert. Allerdings verzichtete er auf den Fotografen- und Zeitungsnachweis, da diese Fotos – und die Art und Weise, wie sie in dieser Broschüre verwendet werden – sehr stark von ihrer ursprünglichen Funktion abweichen.
