Russian Rust Belt, Alan Gignoux

The Urals was formerly at the heart of the soviet military-industrial complex. When Alan Gignoux visited some of the region's single-industry cities in 2009, he encountered familiar "rust belt" problems such as failing industries, abandoned factories, outdated, and dilapidated industrial equipment, decaying housing and communities suffering from the effects of job losses, population loss, and environmental degradation.
