DESCRIPTION

This work, created during a 2021 residency at The Butler Gallery, Kilkenny, is inspired by the River Nore. The river served as a constant companion during my travels to and from Kilkenny, prompting an exploration of its literary and artistic significance. My research led me to Seamus Heaney’s poetry, inspired by visits to his friend and artist Barrie Cooke, whose work is on display at The Butler Gallery. Cooke’s former Thomastown studio, bearing the inscription “Everything Flows”, further solidified the connection. This Heraclitean philosophy resonated deeply, shaping my understanding of the river as a metaphor for the ever-changing nature of life. Embracing this fluidity, my process involved daily walks, embracing observation and serendipitous discoveries. These images are the culmination of that journey: thinking, walking, observing, and photographing—walking being fundamental to my practice.

For those that are not familiar with the project, TLP Editions is an ongoing collection, produced and designed by PhotoIreland, that presents work by contemporary artists in the form of uncomplicated publications. These are available through The Library Project in-store and online. All and any funds generated by the project go to producing more copies of the publications, ensuring we can keep promoting the artists and practices represented. These editions are regularly showcased and donated to international events and festivals, such as the Icelandic Photography Festival recently. In addition, TLP Editions also grace some important shelves and collections, including that of the Hasselblad Foundation Library and the Martin Parr Foundation.

You can find a list of all the TLP Editions here.

PhotoIreland is kindly supported by the Arts Council of Ireland to develop support projects such as the TLP Editions.
