Artist Statement

When passing this scene, you imagine for a brief moment that what you are looking at is real, but it is only a facade. The mural depicts Brown's Row, which, in its time, was the main road leading to the quays of Dundalk. It consisted of two rows of '2-up, 2-down' terraced houses. The houses had running water in the kitchen, a parlour, fireplaces in each of the bedrooms, and an outdoor toilet in the backyard. A glimpse into the past when workers on the docks lived right on its doorstep.

About the Artist

Joanne 'Betty' Conlon is a Dublin-based Irish visual artist whose work explores themes of time and memory. Her work is multifaceted, encompassing photography, drawing, digital media, printmaking, and collage. She graduated from Limerick School of Art & Design, specialising in fine art printmaking. Betty returned to her art practice over a decade ago. Since then, she has exhibited nationally and internationally at the Format International Photography Festival, UK, RHA, RUA, Visual, Dunamaise Arts Centre, and the Library Project, among others. Betty has received funding through The Arts Council Agility Award 2022 and 2023. Her work has featured in the Winter Papers arts anthology and Irish Arts Review.

Her work is held by the Northern Ireland Civil Service Art Collection and by private collectors.

She is a co-owner, along with her husband, of Pixelated, a design studio based in Cabra. She also works part-time for Forvis Mazars as a graphic designer in all digital media areas.
