Issue 1 was curated and arranged to simulate the profound impact of the environmental crisis on our inner and outer worlds. Through HOAX contributors, the pages climb across the different ways in which we can use our capacities to make sense of ecological breakdown, and begin to look beyond it.
Over the past couple of decades, Ireland has experienced an accelerated cultural revolution in the face of its own history, oscillating between tradition and modernity in such a way that creative imaginaries are adopting new ideas while continuing to reflect the old. As society navigates its internal tensions, art holds together a synchronic present, creating a future while acknowledging its past. The social function of the publication today is not to communicate one truth, but to critique grand narratives, gifting the reader with the tools to construct a more balanced understanding of the world. In a potentially pre-apocalyptic era, seeing ourselves as a part of a whole rather than a whole apart from the rest can allow us to recognise our power, connect with our environment and those around us, and transgress in a way that is meaningful to us.
