Frank Abruzzese is an artist, educator, and Co-Director of Cow House Studios, a progressive, artist-run studio in rural Wexford. Originally from Philadelphia, he obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Moving Image Arts from the College of Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2000 and a Master of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2004. Abruzzese's work resides in the permanent collection of the Office of Public Works. He received the Emerging Photographer of the Year award from San Francisco Magazine in 2004. Previously featured in Domus magazine and the 2012 Istanbul Design Biennial, Abruzzese continues to exhibit work internationally.
Rooted in a fascination with systems thinking, Abruzzese's work addresses a variety of subjects from landscape to architecture, portraiture to documentary styles. Photography's inherent duality as a medium of expression and representation provides a material framework for Abruzzese's interests in engineering and problem solving, new technologies, speculative futures, and social systems. Abruzzese's working methods are experimental and process driven. He is drawn to familiar and often overlooked subjects and uses photographic techniques to elucidate concealed frameworks through the unconventional use of film selection, documentary process, exposure, and digital techniques, making minor incursions into perceptions of photography's perceived indexicality.
