The newly invented medium adopted the aesthetics of 19th Century approaches to landscape painting; an emphasis on the picturesque and the sublime, a tradition still today adhered to by tourists boards worldwide. The Icelandic tourist board is no exception!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIceland is presented as ‘out of the ordinary’: a pure and untouched terrain sculpted over the aeons by natural forces and illuminated by fantastical light displays.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eÚtlendingur\u003c\/em\u003e provides a critique of this idealised version of Iceland from the point of view of an outsider. It focuses on the sights of the everyday and seeks to capture the ordinary events within the landscape that don’t conform to the mythic narrative. The result is a playful and affectionate subversion of familiar motifs and an alternative representation of Iceland which goes beyond the clichéd images often used as promotional material in tourist brochures and in the mainstream media.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/sarahflynn.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003esarahflynn.ie\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eFor those that are not familiar with the project, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/photoireland.org\/project\/tlp-editions\/\" title=\"TLP Editions\"\u003eTLP Editions\u003c\/a\u003e is an ongoing collection, produced and designed by \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/photoireland.org\/about-photoireland\/\" title=\"PhotoIreland\"\u003ePhotoIreland\u003c\/a\u003e, that presents work by contemporary artists in the form of uncomplicated publications. These are available through \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.thelibraryproject.ie\/\" title=\"The Library Project\"\u003eThe Library Project\u003c\/a\u003e in-store and online. All and any funds generated by the project go to producing more copies of the publications, ensuring we can keep promoting the artists and practices represented. These editions are regularly showcased and donated to international events and festivals, such as the Icelandic Photography Festival recently.
