The constant threat of redundancy, a move towards working from home, the role of gender inequality and the role of decision makers within the Union movement are all central themes that are explored in this body of work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese photographs document the presidium like interiors of a number of trade union offices in Ireland, Britain, France, Russia, Scandinavia and the United States. Although situated in different societies that have distinct cultural and historical differences in the evolution of how labour was organised, these offices all share commonalities in terms of bureaucratic and organisational structures. These in turn inform how the iconography of organised labour emerged within a society. Interspersed with portraits of contemporary union leaders, this series seeks to interrogate the constructed nature of organised labour, alluding to the immense workings of power defined by a nineteenth century ideology, as well as the hidden decision making process that occurs within the spatial confines of these buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAbout Noel Bowler\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNoel Bowler is a Photographer and Educator. As far back as 2000 an inspector from the Department of Education recommended that planning permission for a permanent school should be initiated due to the “deplorable state of the temporary accommodation”. In 2012 the Irish government announced that it was allocating 35 million that year to replace prefabs with permanent classrooms at over 200 schools. Gaelscoil Bharra was included in this development plan.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen O'Neill started this work it was with the premise of documenting the last year of the prefabs, as building was due to begin in 2013. In March 2016 the first builders finally arrived. This work is the result of the four years she has spent documenting the everyday and not so everyday happenings at the school.\u003cbr\u003e It speaks to the great potential of these young people while posing questions about the frameworks in place to help realise it. In a broader sense it queries the ongoing rhetoric of ‘recovery’ in Ireland, and why it has taken so long to begin to resolve such basic issues\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAbout Mandy O'Neill\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMandy O’Neill is a Dublin based photographer. She has a BA in Photography from the DIT School of Media and is currently doing an MA in Public Culture Studies at IADT. She has been a guest lecturer at the National College of Art and Design and Griffith College Dublin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eO'Neill's practice involves explorations of the local and the everyday, which often resonate globally. It borders the genres of social commentary and the constructed image, with a strong emphasis on the portrait. She has received support from the Arts Council of Ireland and Culture Ireland and her work was featured in the publication New Irish Works 2013.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHer work has been shortlisted twice, in 2014 and 2015 for the Hennessy Portrait Prize and for the Julia Margaret Cameron Award in 2012 and 2014. To this day such sites along with biological weapons testing, which chemical weapons is inextricably linked to, remain problematic even today when they have been returned to civilian usage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDetails of Operation Cleansweep was released into the public realm to provide \"reassurance\" that residual contamination at UK sites did not pose a risk to human health or the environment. Even today some of these sites have ongoing testing to monitor for contaminants. In all 14 sites were identified in this report. Subsequent research uncovered a further 56+ sites in the UK where chemical and biological weapons were once manufactured, stored, and tested. She rented an ordinary suburban house and carried out the strangers’ advice exactly over the period of two months. In complying with the instructions for making the perfect home, she contemplated the construction of an identity from scratch. The locating of raised roads in urban centres have been heavily criticised in the West in recent years. Jane Jacobs’ opposition to the building of the Manhattan Expressway through Greenwich Village is perhaps the best illustration of the prevailing feeling that such infrastructure has the power to both dehumanise and destroy communities.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn Taiwan, these areas have been humanised by people’s interactions with the spaces, developed out of a sheer need in one of the densest countries in the world. Those who live in such areas often have no say in where such roads will be built. Church and State were bound in their conceptualisation of unmarried motherhood as degenerate and sinful. The tragic outcome of this is that generations of mothers and babies were forced apart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs an unmarried mother at the age of 21 in the Ireland of 2002, I had the choice to keep my daughter. But in 1975, for her mother, then aged 20, there was no choice and she was forced to give her son up for adoption shortly after his birth. A similar story can be told of two more of Gillespie's aunts, one as recently as 1985. Stirred by the secrecy and concealment of these events within my family, and inspired by an emerging familial and societal consciousness of the experiences of unmarried mothers and their children, this project seeks to recognise, respect, listen to and hear from those women our society so entirely failed. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe control of sexuality by the Catholic Church and the State in 20th Century Ireland was a powerful barrier to a woman’ s ability to make choices about her body and about her newborn child. Soon after the establishment of an Irish free state in 1922, “Mother and Baby Homes” began appearing to house and hide unwed pregnant women and facilitate the adoption of their children into ‘ proper’ , catholic marital homes. Religious orders claim that the newly formed Irish government invited the Church to deal with the growing ‘ problem’ of single mothers. In the adoption process, birth mothers were silenced, restricted from information and generally excluded from participation to the greatest extent possible. Illegitimate pregnancies, births and resultant adoptions were most often treated as shameful family secrets. Many of these homes are infamous for their cruel treatment of unwed mothers\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eAbout Emer Gillespie\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Gillespie is an Irish artist, currently living in Brighton in the UK. For some, this heritage meets the need to salvage an essential sense of self from the debris of modern estrangement.\u003cbr\u003e In London today, there is a new class in which the financial constellation is dominant and which ultimately traces the roots of its new wealth to the deregulation of the financial markets. These new financial elites are the true heirs to the long held imperial legacy connected with London; their power has grown to a dimension that is truly imperial in the modern world. London is now the destination of choice for the world’s multi billionaires, it is virtually a tax haven, and a large proportion of these new residents now live in the areas McCormack chooses to photograph for \u003cem\u003eFacade\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e The images taken for this project, give a perception of the city as a site of mystery, they seek to reveal and construct a conceptual portrait of this wealthy portion of society. In doing so, they look at how space is formed and organised around them, as social identity is defined and asserted through difference.\u003cbr\u003e Walter Benjamin's writings throw up numerous metaphors for the ways we make sense of the city, he likened these to the work of digging and collecting. The city is understood as a material form that imbeds or encodes meaning; it surrenders these meanings in the form of fragments, clues, hints and echoes.\u003cbr\u003e Utilising a form of psychogeography to overcome the processes of banalisation in the city, where experience of our surroundings becomes one drab monotony. Adding to these, since 2015 we have gained valuable experience participating in various European Union co-funded projects. It is then not by chance that OVER journal comes into being this year.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt all started with a long and deep reflection on our experience over the last decade as a cultural organisation working in Ireland and abroad, founded initially by a Photography graduate to support the discipline. Running a wealth of projects since then, and discussing our experience with peers internationally, we found along the way many cases of questionable practices; these oftentimes reinforced existing power relations, nepotism, favouritism, poor governance, as much as a lack of curatorial renewal, transparency, and a proper evolution of the practice.
