More than a portfolio magazine, it is a space for reflection on new practices, new ways of thinking, shining a light wherever needed.

Contributors
The publication, a project by PhotoIreland developed as part of the Critical Academy, presents works by artists and writers that contribute to a better understanding of the present challenges, and the future opportunities of both the medium and the world we live in. Our work has manifested in a yearly Photography festival, a public resource photobook library, an Art bookshop, various publishing ventures, a print fair, Art residencies such as How to Flatten a Mountain, and a space for critical research called the Critical Academy. Adding to these, since 2015 we have gained valuable experience participating in various European Union co-funded projects. It is then not by chance that OVER journal comes into being this year.

It all started with a long and deep reflection on our experience over the last decade as a cultural organisation working in Ireland and abroad, founded initially by a Photography graduate to support the discipline. Running a wealth of projects since then, and discussing our experience with peers internationally, we found along the way many cases of questionable practices; these oftentimes reinforced existing power relations, nepotism, favouritism, poor governance, as much as a lack of curatorial renewal, transparency, and a proper evolution of the practice. It became apparent that there is an urgency to speak openly about these issues, and that a platform where these discussions could be held publicly is certainly important and necessary.

Our aim is to acknowledge contemporary challenges critically, constructively, and to seek a healthier ecosystem that can support with an honest mindset what current practitioners are bringing into play.

OVER Journal was made possible with the contribution of these wonderful people: Aidan Gageler, Ailbe Collins, Aisling Keavey, Alan Phelan, Andrés Pardo Rodriguez, Andreas Oetker-Kast, Anne Mullee, Aoife Shanahan, Arman Duzel, Becky Warnock, Ben Hutchinson, Bianca Fatu, Caitriona Dunnett, Clare Lymer, Clare Lyons, Clodagh Moreland, Conner Dorbin, Conor Nolan, Dara McGrath, David Kronn, David Thomas Smith, Dianna Wojciechowska, Donall Curtin, Duncan Wooldridge, Eamonn Doyle, Edward Dunne, Elise Fisher, Ellie Berry, Frank Brennan, Garrett Hayes, George Voronov, Harry Rose, Jacqui Kiely, James Cockroft, Jane Cummins, Jennifer Ricketts, John Collins, John O'Toole, Kate Nolan, Keith Shuaib, Lara Ciarabellini, Laurel Bradley, Laurence Gorman, Letizia Lopreiato, Malcolm McGettigan, Mark Kavanagh, Mark Tracy, Michael Lee, Miriam O'Connor, Mo White, Moritz Neumüller, Niamh Smith, Olga McGeough, Mandy O'Neill, Orla Fitzpatrick, Paula Nolan, Raphael Schumacher, Rodrigo Orrantia, Róisín White, Ruby Wallis, Sarah Shaw, Seán Laoide-Kemp, Sebastian Farron-Mahon, Shane Lynam, Shannon Guerrico, Sharon Murphy, Sheaneen Healy Byrne, Simon Worthington, Ste Murray, Therese Barry, Thomas Bregulla, Thomas Licek, Tommie Lehane, Yvette Monahan, and Zoe Hamill.

Published by PhotoIreland
160 pages
184 × 245 mm
Softcover
ISBN 9781916140417

Global Distribution: raandollyltd.com

Billy Kenrick
Docklands, Dublin, 2013
Postcard

billykenrick.com

Presented as part of St. Patrick's Festival cultural city trail in 2020, and to mark the first decade of PhotoIreland, The Library Project brings together 100 Views of Contemporary Ireland, a collection of photographs in the form of postcards by 100 contemporary photographers from Ireland.

Viewers will discover a different Ireland through the incisive, playful, and poignant work of these artists. Connecting our individual practices, we found a kind of common ground and I was inspired to not only scan and print my father’s images, but to manipulate and develop them further on the basis of recorded conversations with him in which I identified people, places and objects that he has completely forgotten; remembers vaguely but within different contexts; and can fully recall, including his wife Hazel, my mother.

Through processes of cutting, scraping and the use of stickers to intervene with my father’s photographs, I am seeking to depict both the decline of his cognitive health and the physical approach I have adopted to grieve my father while he is still alive. In this project, the recurring use of stickers is intended to represent the loss of my father's memory, while each sticker underscores the the extent to which he has forgotten a particular individual, setting or event. In this intimate examination, I manipulate these photographs based on conversations with him, where stickers are strategically placed over details he no longer remembers. The use of stickers is twofold: visually, they symbolize the erasure and fragmentation of memory, and metaphorically, they represent the 'stickiness' of dementia—how certain memories linger while others slip away, akin to the unpredictable adhesiveness of a sticker. The colours of the stickers indicate the extent of his forgetfulness, transforming these images into a tactile representation of memory loss and the physical manifestation of grief.

debbiecastro.com

For those that are not familiar with the project, TLP Editions is an ongoing collection, produced and designed by PhotoIreland, that presents work by contemporary artists in the form of uncomplicated publications. They reflect our desire to create personal paradises, yet gardens are not natural and “paradise” requires work to shape and maintain it. From cultivation to recreation, gardens are formed through repeated acts over time. There is an interplay between labour and leisure, control and growth. Gardeners, workers, visitors, and plant life become participants in an ongoing, time-based performance. Gerry Blake and Carmel Ennis visited a variety of gardens, and in each location they explored how the garden is enacted by its own vitality, along with the life and energy of those who use it.

gerryblake.net

instagram.com

For those that are not familiar with the project, TLP Editions is an ongoing collection, produced and designed by PhotoIreland, that presents work by contemporary artists in the form of uncomplicated publications. Trace, anticipated nostalgia, and the fleeting nature of the present moment are central themes in this series. Through photographs that echo more than they document, the artist builds scenes that feel like remembering forward. These constructed memories aim to confront the inevitability of change, capturing the essence of passing moments often overlooked. Each image becomes both a preservation and a reimagining, blurring the line between what was, what is, and what we long for.
