Given away with magazines or sent out by advertisers, they were a splashy way of getting your message heard. Pressed onto laminated card or thin, wobbly plastic, these discs extolled the virtues of washing powders, beers, and banks. Specially commissioned tunes took as their unlikely subjects shoe shops, bakers, and even dentists. This book brings together over 150 images of the most remarkable British flexi discs from the 1950s to the early 1990s, chronicling the varied and sometimes bizarre uses of these flimsy records, and the result is a fascinating archive of post-war design and advertising ingenuity.

Published by Four Corners Books
Softcover
160 pages
220 × 160 mm
ISBN 9781909829145

Special edition triple gatefold 6 vinyl release featuring 55 new tracks from Mark Broom [aka Visitor], Donnacha Costello, Keith Tucker [aka DJ-K1], Rob Rowland, Shawn Rudiman, Decoy [aka Decal], Americhord, Annie Hall Zvuku, David Donohoe, Eamonn Doyle, Oberman Knocks, Who's The Technician, Educution, Active Service Unit, Derek Carr, Bombjack, Automatic Tasty, Lerosa, Glenn Davis, TR One, Irene Buckley, Naphta, Alan Smith, Linda Buckely, Joni and Kaboogie, Ikeaboy, Baiyon, Five Green Circle, Lenoid, Roger Doyle, Foot Note, Scott Logan, Index, H Williams, LDR-21, Seventh Earth Project.

For as long as there has been dance music in Dublin, there has been techno. Departing from the urban sphere and commencing its voyage deep into the mountains, the school’s curriculum explores the polemic effects of ‘self perseverance’ through the social practice of survivalism; moving through examples such as an assimilated ‘outdoor’ swimming pool situated in a 15-story underground survival bunker designed for those who hoard economic wealth, to skimming the surface of open resources available from online prepping communities. Delving into the lack of depth within these social movements, the narrator, Ranger Herlihy, forewarns of the damaging effect of implicated de-prioritisation of collective scale action—that is, the point at which preparing for the potential risks brought about by environmental, economic and/or societal damage supersedes the more important task of advocating for structural and revolutionary change.

Intended for either a long drive across country or as a pedagogical tool to disrupt lecture halls & reading groups, this audio tour utilises the scripted nature of reality survival shows and provides a participatory script to each listener and invites them to take up a single role spanning from Doomsday Prepper alumni, ‘Warrior’ Martin to ‘eco crusader,’ Al Gore.

Beyond Survival School Bus: AUDIO TOUR (2024) is adapted from a 90-minute free bus tour performed in 2022 at Dublin Fringe Festival and adapted for an audio tour for TULCA Festival of Visual Arts 2024. Instead they illuminate the multitude of comings-and-goings that occur throughout its lifecycle: the quietening of birdsong, the thickening and dispersal of the wind, the ever-changing texture of the rain. The title itself is an act of misdirection. Most of the runtime concerns the storm's prelude (it's a full half-hour before we hear the first rumble of thunder), and we're ushered into a fadeout before we even reach the aftermath. Thus we're left to reevaluate the edges that constitute the composition and its concept. When can a storm be said to truly commence? What if the aftermath is for us to nurture within ourselves, in silence, after Carr and Donohoe have departed the frame?

The piece is based on a performance at last year's Open Ear Festival, which takes place each year on Sherkin Island in Cork, Ireland. Using a combination of field recordings, instruments and natural materials gathered from across the island, the duo trace the transformation of a landscape as a storm passes through it. Their instrument performances often manifest as acts of camouflage, with horn-like drones woven into the actual howl of coastal gales, or shakers mimicking the early stirrings of a downpour. Yet elsewhere these musical interventions are sudden: deep, metallic clangs that ripple through the surrounding environment, sending mammalian bleats into retreat and calling amphibious gurgles forward, announcing the progression of the storm into a new phase. There's no dramatic climax. The thunder is fleeting and subdued, caught within the crossfade between anticipation and consequence.

String Machine 2 entailed the commissioning of new recorded works for stringed instruments from Dónal Lunny and Leopold Hurt.
