To explore the relationship between fiction and design, zine editor and curator Joanette van der Veer and Maria Pestana set up a lab during the first edition of the Porto Design Biennale, resulting in the publication of Fiction Practice: Prototyping The Otherworldly. The results of the lab were four workshops led by key design thinkers and curators of contemporary design. Each of the four workshops, with a different character, enacted a kind of institutional model - an archive, an assembly, a committee and a school.
Through speculative design, Afro-surrealism, critical fabulations and re-edited pedagogies the radical potential of fiction as a critical design tool was explored. Bringing with it new impossiblities to life, remixed histories and artifacts, disclosed parallel dimensions and modelled ontological oddities.
