Susurration is a riso print created at Black Church Print Studios in 2022. It is an extract from a larger text, Murmur (2019). This was a script created for an audio performance, performed in venues such as The Hugh Lane Gallery (2019), with a further edit shown in The Library Project as a wall text (Murmur II), as part of ‘Living Balance’ exhibition (2022). These poetic texts are composed from comments underneath starling murmuration videos online. Any direct reference to the composition being about birds is removed, leaving a comment on group activity, paranoia and wonder in the current era.
Suzanne Walsh is an artist and writer from Wexford living in Dublin. They work mainly with performance, voice, music, and audio, as well as some video and photography. They use recitation, recordings, vocalisations, acting, and text appropriation to create rituals, invocations, poetic disturbances, guided tours, and performative lectures. These works, along with writing, attempt to create rifts through which new meanings and realities may occur. The non-human world, from the unseen to the animal, is the main concern of the work, as an attempt to re-order structures of value. This includes work like Lazarus Lingua, an invocation of extinct animals, and Our Always is Here, an automatic writing and audio work in homage to the work of Æ Russell, involving a collaboration with ghosts in the artist’s house. They often collaborate with other artists, including filmmaker Vivienne Dick, and The Experimental Film Society.
Suzanne Walsh also publishes essays, art-writing, poetry, and fiction in literary publications including gorse journal, Fallowmedia, Winter Papers, and Hotel magazine, as well as essays and creative writing for art publications and gallery catalogues. Suzanne Walsh’s practice has been supported by the Arts Council, Culture Ireland, Arts and Disability Ireland, and Fire Station Artist Studios.
They have performed/shown/published work in shows including Living Balance, The Library Project (2022), The Body Electric, at The Model Gallery, Sligo (2021), Tulca (2020), Winter Papers at Engage Studios Galway (2019), Embodiment at Gallery Michaelastock, Vienna (2019), Post Opera at TENT Gallery Rotterdam (2019). They were previously a recipient of the Project Space Award at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios (2020-2021). The Irish Arts Council recently added a performance work BirdBecomeBIrd.
